DTF vs Screen Printing: Which Is Better for Custom Shirts?
Both methods make great custom shirts. The right choice depends on your design, your quantity and your budget.
How screen printing works
A separate mesh screen is prepared for each color. Ink is pushed through the screen onto the shirt. Setup takes time, but once it is ready, printing many identical shirts is efficient.
How DTF works
The design is printed onto film, coated with adhesive powder and heat-pressed onto the shirt. There is no screen to make for each color, so complex multi-color art is not a problem. See our DTF guide.
Quick comparison
- Many colors or gradients: DTF handles them without extra setup.
- One or two solid colors, very large order: screen printing is often the efficient choice.
- Small or mixed orders: DTF avoids per-color setup.
- Photos and fine detail: DTF reproduces them well.
Which should you pick?
If your design has several colors, detail or a small run, DTF is usually a great fit. Not sure? Send us your artwork and quantity and we will recommend an option.
